Social Media Can Create Problems During Divorce

Social media has become a mainstay in the lives of many in Pennsylvania. It seems nearly second nature to post thoughts and feelings on Facebook, Twitter, personal blogs and other online outlets. These messages and postings can come back to haunt you, however, if you are going through a bitter divorce.

At The Law Offices of Brian E. Quinn, we offer advice and counsel to our clients on the subject of social media use in domestic relations cases. We can help you understand how what you put on the internet can affect all aspects of your divorce, including child custody, child support and alimony determinations. We are skilled at both defending our clients against social media evidence and using it in our clients’ favor.

How Social Media Can Affect Your Case

Messages can be posted online instantly. Once published, they are out there forever. This causes significant problems for people, because it is so easy to post online that people tend to lose their ability to filter themselves. This leads to emotional postings, including some that threaten violence against a spouse or child.

Messages from Facebook, Twitter and similar outlets can be used as evidence in divorce cases. For example, if you write about how much money you make and how much you travel, but then argue that you cannot afford to pay child support or alimony, your online writings can be used to show that you may be being untruthful to the court.

As lawyers, we help our clients deal with social media when we handle domestic cases. If the evidence is presented against our client, we will work hard to overcome it through positive evidence. If our client’s spouse has posted derogatory statements online, we are adept at obtaining those statements and using them to help our client’s case.
