How can addiction impact your medical license?

On behalf of The Law Offices of Brian E. Quinn | Nov 25, 2020 | Medical Licensing

Addiction is a terrible disease that can ruin lives. Even if you feel your addiction is not impacting your life in a negative way, it almost always is.

If you have a medical license, your addiction is putting your career at risk. The Addiction Center explains that addiction rates in the medical field are incredibly high, so you are not alone. However, that does not mean you will not face potential issues with your medical license due to your addiction.

The risks

When you work in the medical field and you are using a substance, you increase the chances that you will make a mistake. In your line of work, there is non room for errors. One mistake could leave you in a position to lose your medical license.

There is also more of a chance that you will neglect patients or your duties. This can also lead to problems with your performance that allow people to file complaints against you with the medical board.

Reasons for addiction

You have to accept that you have a problem before you can get help and avoid the potential issues that could arise from your addiction. There are many work-related reasons for those in the medical field that can feed an addiction.

In this field, you have a lot of stress. You work long hours and deal with things that are mentally and emotionally draining.  You also have easy access to many addictive substances.

The good news is that as a worker in the medical field, you are more likely than any other group to seek treatment. So, do not be afraid to seek help and beat your addiction.
